APHORISM 8
"After the elimination of all the symptoms and perceptible signs of disease, one cannot imagine or demonstrate by any experiment in the world that anything but health remains, that anything but health could remain; nor can one doubt that all the pathological changes inside the organism have been neutralized.

When someone has been cured by a real physician, so that no sign or symptom of disease remains and all the indications of health have permanently returned, can one without affronting human intelligence possibly maintain that the disease continues to dwell somewhere in the economy?

Yet this is what a past authority of the old school, Hufeland, maintained when he said (Homoopathie, p. 27,1. 19): "Homoeopathy can remove symptoms, but the disease remains." He said this partly out of spite because of the progress of homoeopathy for the good of mankind and partly because of his still totally materialistic conception of disease. He could not conceive of it as a state of being of the organism dynamically untuned by a disturbed vital force, as an alteration in the state of health, but considered it as a material thing, which could, after a cure, remain hidden in some secret corner of the organism to reveal its material presence at a later date, breaking out at will right in the midst of flourishing health!

Such is as yet the blindness of the old pathology! After all that, no wonder it has no other therapy to offer than "sweeping clean" the poor patient!

Hahnemann continues to rail at the "parts are parts" doctors of his time (and indeed, it continues to this day in our time!). He notes that after all the symptoms are gone, he cannot imagine anyone being able to prove beyond a doubt, that only good health remains. He especially brings to task that all the pathology symptoms have been neutralized, also.

I find his use of the word 'neutralized' interesting but on target. The symptoms are not suppressed (as they are by traditional doctors and their drug medicines). They are not dissolved. Rather, they are met head on, if you will, by the single correct homeopathic remedy that will stimulate the entire body and all its forces, including the immune system to respond and react. In doing so, the weaker disease (the set of symptoms the patient had) is 'neutralized.' Nice and tidy.

In (a) the doctors of Hahnemann's time ridiculed him for saying that once a person is cured of all symptoms only health can occur, they tried to tell him that in some corner, system or organ, the 'disease' was still hiding--and would "jump out" and reassert itself at some later time. Hahnemann, of course, scoffed at them because he'd seen homeopathy work and he saw CURE. Cure is the absence of disease, of symptoms. With cure, only health, good health, is in its place.

And unless the person undergoes some future stress/trauma/shock or puts themselves into an obstacle to cure situation, then health will remain the foundation of that person's vital force for the rest of their life.

So krass ist noch die Verblendung der alten Pathologie! Kein Wunder, dass eine solche nur eine Therapie erzeugen konnte, die auf blosses Ausfegen des armen Kranken losging.

When all symptoms, signs of disease and accompanying accidents are removed then what remains, is health.

In the 2nd footnote he tells us what disease is for him:

If the vital force gets out of tune by morbid influences then the state of the organism gets dynamically changed by the vital force. Is the old pathology still 'en vogue'? Yes, I think so. The discussion about disease is often focussed e..g. on THE germ. Call it bacteria, virus, fungus.

Let's take Borrelia , the bacteria that causes Lyme disease. Nowadays Borreliosis is treated with tetracyclines, sometimes penicillines. It's common in humans, dogs, horses. A lot of dogs e.g. have antibodies without ever showing signs of disease. So they had contact with Borrelia-carrying ticks - but didn't get the disease.

Those that show symptoms and get a treatment with antibiotics show quite often a 2nd flare-up of the symptoms without new infection. So those tiny buggers lie hidden 'in a corner of the inside of the organism'. Right. But, BUT, with Homoeopathy we treat the symptoms that are expressed by the individual organism - we don't fight Borrelia. And when those symptoms disappear - and no new ones present - we know that the state of health of the individual is balanced , and the vital force is in tune again.

COMMENTS FROM DEBRA:
Eileen, I agree with everything that you have said. If anything, I would just reiterate the fact the Hahnemann stated that ALL the symptoms of the disease must be removed, or 'neutralized' to use Eileen's word. Thus, again we can see the importance of the TOTALITY of symptoms.

For instance, any malady, however innocent it may seem, can and will manifest symptoms (albeit sometimes VERY subtle symptoms). An example of this would be a headache. I'm not talking about your once in a blue moon headache, or migraines, which often have an organic cause.

However, chronic headaches (with no observable etiology) are often found, at least in my experience, in folks who are very self-critical...this is often turned inwards, they tend to be introverted and also have a great, deep-rooted fear of both failure and success. The proverbial 'stuck between a rock and a hard place' mentality.

I can very often remove headache pain immediately, with acupressure, and sometimes I do, to give relief. However, by doing this, the headache is not really 'neutralized' but rather it is just switched off, temporarily. The important thing to do is reach the vf on the level that is making this person self-destruct. Once you remove the symptoms on this level, the headaches should go away, too.

So, removing the physical symptoms is only part of it. As Hahnamann stated, and will talk about more as we get further into the Organon study, it is imperative to remove ALL symptoms to affect a cure. Sometimes this requires some serious rooting around in the closet to find any and all skeletons that may be lurking there.

No matter how we slice it, the remedy must match the 'sum total' of all the 'parts' of the organism.

Where the disease/symptoms go is another matter. They just cease to exist, and should they return, after a period of being absent, then we can only assume that the vf has become unbalanced again.

Hahnemann specifically states "the elimination of all symptoms". Taking paracetamol for the fever does not eliminate the fever, it suppresses it while the paracetamol is active. As soon as the blood levels drop and the drug is metabolized the fever returns (unless the infection has ceased) and it is time for another dose.

Going back to Hahnemanns original ideas, he says that the symptoms are produced by the vital force as a result of the inner disturbance. So logically the only way symptoms can be eliminated is by harmonizing the inner disturbance.

This would be the inner state represented by the inner delusions, the effects of causative factors and that part of the inner psyche that is in a learning process. Once the inner wisdom has been gained, this inner disturbance is redundant and not needed (until we forget the learned wisdom and need reminding again). Any further areas of spiritual growth needed will also produce states of inner disturbance, each at its own time and the resultant impact via the vital force will be a new set of symptoms or a new stance. Only if symptoms indicate disharmony should they be addressed with a simillimum.

So when Hahnemann says health will be restored he is not talking about immortality and freedom from further disease. That particular disease state has been cured and now the rest of life's purpose can unfold.

As I have mentioned in previous posts, the simillimum should address the inner disturbance by virtue of its uniqueness and match to the inner disturbance. This is the quality of every medicine, that it is unique in its action. Now there are many "arthritis remedies" or "diarrhoea remedies" so that is not the level of uniqueness. The level corresponds to the particular delusional state or attitude that the person has inwardly adopted.

Sometimes "polypharmacists" will claim to be treating all the symptoms by giving a liver remedy and a kidney remedy and a drainage combo and .......... No such combination will touch the inner state. The disease will either reappear or appear on a deeper level. Any benefits to be had from such treatment should be seen as the result of being off allopathic medication and so not suffering the added assault of allopathic side-effects. So a child with ear infections improves on combo therapy.  This is also because the child is not receiving anti-biotics anymore and the vital force has a better chance of survival. But the constitution is not addressed, all that has happened is that time has been bought, - but the bomb could still be ticking away.

When a "simillimum" is found that is based on mainly physicals, the physicals disappear for a while and reappear again later, so there is usually a need for repeated doses. For example a Rhus tox type arthritic.  Every cold spell or after each period of overwork, the pains come back only to be swiftly dispatched by another dose of that magic Rhus tox. The inner state has still remained and continues to throw out via the vital force. Now another remedy may reach in deeper and cure the sensitivity to cold, or apply a change in approach so that the person is not such a compulsive worker. On the other hand, if the whole case complies with the Rhus tox essence (as I have found with 2 patients), then it can act constitutionally and the symptoms will not reappear or take a very long time to reappear.  (In both cases, the mental symptoms and generals were well covered by Rheas tox)

Now we will find less need to repeat any remedies (for that particular disease state).
